Many parents know the many burdens as a family which often deprive them of sleep. The COMPARE research project aims to help parents who suffer from sleep problems, especially insomnia. Approximately 10% of adults suffer from sleep problems. The most common complaints include: Problems falling asleep, frequent nighttime awakenings, lying awake for long periods of time at night, or difficulty waking up in the morning. Such sleep problems can lead to daytime fatigue, concentration problems, irritability and other daytime impairments.
The COMPARE research project, funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung), aims to support families in which at least one parent suffers from sleep disorders. The main goal of the study is to compare two different treatment options. The aim of the project is to reduce the extent of the parents' sleep disorder and the associated stress.
After two preliminary examinations in which the family's strengths and stresses are recorded, sleep training for the parents follows. This comprises 12 weekly sessions and is conducted at the Psychotherapeutic University Outpatient Clinic for Children, Adolescents and their Families (Psychotherapeutischen Hochschulambulanz für Kinder, Jugendliche und ihre Familien ,HAKIJU). Randomly selected, half of the participating parents also receive additional parent training, called the Positive Parenting Program "Triple P."
Participation in the treatment program is free of charge and covered by german health insurance. Following the training, two follow-up examinations take place to measure the effects of the sleep training and the additional parent training. Of course, the research team is bound by confidentiality in all discussions and examinations.
